Shock-induced superheating and melting curves of geophysically important minerals

چکیده
Shock-state temperature and sound-speed measurements on crystalline materials, demonstrate superheating-melting behavior distinct from equilibrium melting. Shocked solid can be superheated to the maximum temperature, Tc′ . At slightly higher pressure, Pc, shock melting occurs, and induces a lower shock temperature, Tc. The Hugoniot state, (Pc, Tc), is inferred to lie along the equilibrium melting curve. The amount of superheating achieved on Hugoniot is, Θ+ H = Tc′/Tc − 1. Shock-induced superheating for a number of silicates, alkali halides and metals agrees closely with the predictions of a systematic framework describing superheating at various heating rates [Appl. Phys. Lett. 82 (12) (2003) 1836]. High-pressure melting curves are constructed by integration from (Pc, Tc) based on the Lindemann law. We calculate the volume and entropy changes upon melting at (Pc, Tc) assuming the R ln 2 rule (R is the gas constant) for the disordering entropy of melting [J. Chem. Phys. 19 (1951) 93; Sov. Phys. Usp. 117 (1975) 625; Poirier, J.P., 199

متن کاملMelting at the Limit of Superheating
Theories on superheating-melting mostly involve vibrational and mechanical instabilities, catastrophes of entropy, volume and rigidity, and nucleation-based kinetic models. The maximum achievable superheating is dictated by nucleation process of melt in crystals, which in turn depends on material properties and heating rates. We have established the systematics for maximum superheating by incor...

The maximum superheating and undercooling achievable at various heating ~or cooling! rates were investigated based on classical nucleation theory and undercooling experiments, molecular dynamics ~MD! simulations, and dynamic experiments. The highest ~or lowest! temperature Tc achievable in a superheated solid ~or an undercooled liquid! depends on a dimensionless nucleation barrier parameter b a...
متن کاملPressure-induced superheating of Al nanoparticles encapsulated in Al2O3 shells without epitaxial interface
Quantitative measurements were carried out on the pressure effect of superheating of Al nanoparticles encapsulated in Al2O3 shells without epitaxial interfaces. In situ XRD experiments revealed that encapsulated Al nanoparticles with different particle sizes can be superheated to 7–15 K beyond the bulk equilibrium melting point of Al, and that this is accompanied by a suppressed thermal expansi...
متن کاملSuperheating of ice crystals in antifreeze protein solutions.
It has been argued that for antifreeze proteins (AFPs) to stop ice crystal growth, they must irreversibly bind to the ice surface. Surface-adsorbed AFPs should also prevent ice from melting, but to date this has been demonstrated only in a qualitative manner. Here we present the first quantitative measurements of superheating of ice in AFP solutions. Superheated ice crystals were stable for hou...
